Introduction video

By 2050, the City of Amsterdam aims to reduce its CO2 emissions by 95% compared to 1990 emissions, with the goal of not further exceeding the earth's natural limits. To achieve this goal, Amsterdam is working towards a natural gas-free, emission-free and energy-neutral city. This video introduces you to the Energie Lab Zuidoost.

Amsterdam Southeast goes a step further and aims to be energy neutral by 2040. The development of Amsterdam Zuidoost offers opportunities to combine sustainability with poverty reduction and social improvement. For example, by improving the living comfort of homes when they are renovated. Or by creating local employment opportunities during large-scale renovations. We call this social energy transition.

Realizing this requires cooperation from many different parties. Both the government and residents, as well as companies and researchers. The Energie Lab Zuidoost brings these parties together. The goal is to use scientific expertise to contribute directly to issues and projects in Amsterdam Southeast.

We focus on a number of upscalable pilots and experiments in Amsterdam Southeast that are carried out by various companies, public organizations and residents. Here we bring together practice, policy, research and education. In a scientific workshop we monitor these pilots to draw lessons for scaling up and work with a team of researchers from different disciplines together with the municipality on relevant issues.

The Energy Lab Southeast provides an exchange of knowledge between different projects, organizations and disciplines. The knowledge is widely shared so that innovations can be applied throughout Amsterdam and beyond.

Working method and themes

By experimenting together in different 'Living Labs' we develop and test innovations. We do this together with business, residents, government and science. In the Living Labs we learn what works really well. The experiments are monitored from science. We learn how these innovations can be applied in metropolitan environments. By organizing workshops and events, knowledge is exchanged between different projects, organizations and disciplines.

The field experiments take place around four themes:

1: Local smart energy systems
In the ArenAPoort area, a scalable neighborhood energy platform is being developed and tested for a wide variety of stakeholders.

2: Sustainable residential renovation
In Reigersbos, work is underway to scale up the residential renovation approach. With this approach, facades are being renewed and various renovation packages have been developed for the owner-occupied homes for comfortable homes with a healthy living environment.

3: Low temperature heat networks
In Amstel III, a new and sustainable heat network is being realized in Southeast that uses residual heat from a data center. By researching both limitations in the current market and the technical requirements of low temperature heat network projects, we are developing a blueprint for such heat networks.

4: Equitable energy transition
In Amsterdam Southeast, research is being conducted into the social, societal and technical aspects of energy transition.

In this collection you will find more information about the Energie Lab Zuidoost and the four themes. For more information see: www.energielabzuidoost.nl.
