Private art museums have experienced a boom over the past few years, with at least 446 now open around the world. These museums could just be seen as philanthropic gestures by their founders, making private collections accessible to the public. But there is more to the story. And their findings reveal how the emergence of these institutions holds up a mirror to ongoing inequalities in the art world.
