Researchers and access to data

While there are sometimes reasons not to release data, it is questionable whether this is always desirable, especially given the great influence of digital systems. The EU has created new rules to improve transparency and data access, but these take little account of the interests of researchers. This report explores two questions: what problems do researchers face in accessing data, and what opportunities and limitations do recent EU laws offer? The report is part of a UvA study on how universities can ensure data access and digital control in a rapidly changing world.
