Information as Actor
On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Juan Carlos Goilo defended his PhD thesis: Information actors beyond modernity and coloniality in times of climate change.
A comparative design ethnography on the making of monitors for sustainable futures in Curaçao and Amsterdam, between 2019-2022.
In his dissertation, Goilo developed a cutting-edge theoretical framework for an Anthropology of Information. This study compares information in the context of modernity in Amsterdam and coloniality in Curaçao through the making process of monitors and develops five ways to understand how information can act towards sustainable futures. The research also discusses how the two contexts, that is modernity and coloniality, have been in informational symbiosis for centuries which is producing negative informational side effects within the age of the Anthropocene. By exploring the modernity-coloniality symbiosis of information, the author explains how scholars, policymakers, and data-analysts can act through historical and structural roots of contemporary global inequities related to the production and distribution of information. Ultimately, the five theses propose conditions towards the collective production of knowledge towards a more sustainable planet. -

Amsterdam International Water Week 2023
The seventh edition of Amsterdam International Water Week takes place November 6-9!
Amsterdam International Water Week brings together water leaders worldwide and bridges the gap between today's challenges and future needs. This global community sees water as a means to accelerate resilient and sustainable developments. The central theme of AIWW2023 is 'Water in transition. Accelerate Action' and has four sub-themes: (1) Improving water quality, (2) Resilient water systems, (3) Circular solutions: Reuse, Restoration and Recycle, (4) Transitions in water, agro/food and energy.
This decade we focus on water as a starting point for the implementation of integrated solutions, which have a substantial impact on Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation), 9 Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure, 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities) and 13 (Climate Action). In this collection you will find the program of AIWW2023 and a collection about the Sustainable Development Goals. Here you will also find more about water-related themes that are discussed in the Amsterdam city council, such as the water vision of Amsterdam 2040. And you can watch various programs and sessions from the AIWW2021! -

Challenges & Solutions in the city
How do we keep our feet dry? Get to know programs and initiatives that offer solutions for this issue.
Due to climate change, periods of heavy precipitation or persistent heat are becoming more common. Cities must adapt to this, otherwise major problems will arise due to flooding, subsidence and damage to public spaces. In this collection, get to know a number of programs and initiatives that offer solutions for this issue, and how everyone can participate.
What happens to the raindrops that fall in the city? In the Rainproof collection you will discover the many - small and large - ways to make an environment rainproof. One of the ways to optimize water management in the future is the 'blue-green' roofs of the RESILIO network. In the Master's thesis 'Prevent the Flood', four locations in Amsterdam were analyzed at different scale levels, which provided guidelines for making Amsterdam a 'stormwater-resistant' city. -

Open Science
What is open science? Which views, plans and discussions are taking place locally, nationally and globally?
The open science movement aims to make science more accessible, strengthen collaboration with parties and citizens outside science, and to ensure that the processes of scientific practice are as transparent as possible
Yet the goals and methods to get there are not obvious. As the book 'Opening science' shows, the movement has unfolded in a system that was not open science practice. And also within the movement there are differences in perspectives of what open science should be about.
For example, chapter five discusses different schools of thought: that of infrastructure (efficient knowledge creation through open tools and applications), of publicity (scientific work must be made understandable to citizens), of measurement (scientific practice must be recognized and valued differently), of pragmatics (in which cooperation increases the efficiency of knowledge creation) and of democracy (in which science becomes as accessible as possible for everyone).
You will find some of those perspectives in this collection. You will also find the visions and policies that have been developed as a result of the movement to streamline and strengthen open science at the local, national and international level. -

Knowledge security
How do we ensure that knowledge developed in the Netherlands is not stolen or misused?
This collection is about knowledge security, a term that refers to the protection of knowledge developed in the Netherlands against robbery and misuse by countries that can or want to harm the Netherlands militarily, economically or otherwise.
Knowledge security is not new, but with (according to the intelligence services) an increasing threat of espionage and influence at knowledge institutions, the issues of scientific collaboration, screening, academic freedom, openness, discrimination, and even the position of science in the Netherlands as a whole are growing. What is wisdom? -

Urban street experiments
What are street experiments and can they transform our cities?
Street experiments in the city are a growing phenomenon all over the world. They can help with small, but also large spatial problems that the city has. What is a street experiment and how can you approach it?
Prof. Dr. Ir. Luca Bertolini (UvA) describes a street experiment as an "intentional and temporary change in street use, regulation and/or way to explore a systematic change in urban mobility" (see article 'From "streets for traffic" to "streets for people"').
In this collection you will find a toolkit (guide) for conducting street experiments. Learn more about the transformative power of street experimentation and a handbook for believing it. Finally, there are a number of examples of street experiments that have been carried out in Amsterdam. -

Hidden under the Amstel
Urban stories of Amsterdam told through archaeological finds from the North/South Line.
The construction in 2003-2018 of the new metro through the center of Amsterdam, the North/South line, gave access to a unique archaeological site at the Damrak and Rokin construction sites: the riverbed of the Amstel. Almost 700,000 finds have been collected here, which are connected to the history of Amsterdam from 1300 to 2000.
In 2018, the photo catalog Stuff with 13,000 finds was published, offering a functional picture story of objects and materials that were used in Amsterdam over the centuries. As a follow-up to this, Onder de Amstel was created, in which the narrative qualities of archaeological finds are central. Such remnants are tangible and they are connected to the daily reality of the past. In combination with historical writings and images, they put us on the trail of actual events, buildings and institutions and even people in Amsterdam in the past. -

Five essays on citizenship and democratization
In this collection you will find five essays by the Urban Citizen Fellows, written as a conclusion to their research.
The Urban Citizen Fellowship program is a collaboration between the Netherlands Institute of Advance Studies (NIAS) and the City of Amsterdam.
This unique fellowship offers researchers the opportunity to carry out research projects on issues related to living in a city and feeling like a citizen. It combines the advantages of working in the interdisciplinary environment of an Institute for Advanced Study with the advantages of a project with a high societal impact and concrete results.
Based on the research results, an important aspect of the Urban Citizen Fellowship is to provide insights and advice for policy making for the City of Amsterdam. Each fellow works with a relevant contact person at the municipality to encourage intellectual exchange and practical collaboration. The urban citizen fellows also work together, with each fellow building on the work of previous fellows. The fellowship concludes with an essay written for a general audience and a lecture or presentation to the congregation. The essays are written in Dutch. -

Dossier: Circular Economy
From 6 to 11 February it's the Week of the Circular Economy. In this collection, openresearch provides an overview of this theme.
'Circular' is a commonly used term. In this collection, openresearch provides an overview of the various ways in which circularity is discussed and contributes to a circular economy. The circular economy refers to an economic system in which the value of products and materials is preserved for as long as possible and waste and the use of resources are kept to a minimum. Resources or products are also kept in the economy at the end of their lifespan, so that they can be reused several times and thus continue to be of value.
In this collection you can read how the City of Amsterdam is implementing the government-wide program 'Nederland Circulair 2050', and which tools (instruments) exist and are used that contribute to this objective. -

Changing Rhythms During the Pandemic in Amsterdam Zuidoost
Rhythms are part of many aspects of urban life. How do changes in rhythms affect people's daily experiences?
The cities are organised and characterised by the day and night, seasons, work/school days and weekends, holidays, weekly markets, rush hours, lunchtimes, and many more.
However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the city rhythms were disturbed. For the spread of an airborne disease, the main characteristics of rhythms, bringing people together in space and time in different periodicities and durations, have been problematic. While the lockdown can be seen as an intervention in the city rhythms, it did not recognise the rhythmic quality of urban life. It demanded many daily activities to be on hold, spread out, scaled down and controlled, affecting family life, different forms of communities, public spaces and work and school environments, as well as the mobility and movement of people within neighbourhoods, cities, and countries. As a result, the COVID-19 pandemic caused drastic social consequences, leaving many unemployed, increasing loneliness, and creating difficulties within households.
How did such changes in rhythms affect the daily experiences of people? Which rhythms are we talking about anyway when we mention this, and how can we study them? Perhaps the pandemic, the lockdown, and how the virus affected all of us can teach us something new about the essential rhythms in our lives. -

The 10th of December is International Human Rights Day. The week leading up to this day is Digital Rights Week.
During this week, activities related to digital human rights will take place throughout the city. Digital human rights are about all human rights from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, but in the context of the digital, online world.
With digital human rights you can therefore think of the right to privacy, but also the right to participate. How do we ensure that everyone has access to the digital world? For example, for arranging banking affairs.
In this collection you can read which initiatives are taking place during the Digital Rights Week in Amsterdam. You will also find information about municipal policy on digital rights and which tools Amsterdam uses to safeguard people's digital rights. Subsequently, digital rights are discussed from an international perspective, and you will find research on the theme of digital rights by Amsterdam and national knowledge institutions. Finally, you will find a collection on the sub-theme of privacy. -

Housing
How has the housing market developed in the past two years and how satisfied are Amsterdammers with their living environment?
The increasing attractiveness of Amsterdam and, in particular, the improving economy have major effects on the city. Three years ago, for example, there was a financial crisis that led to a crisis in the construction industry. There was hardly any construction or transformation. However, for a few years now, investors have been queuing up to start building again. More houses have been built in the last two years than in the previous four years combined. More supply helps to meet demand. Despite the major sprint in new construction, house prices in the owner-occupied sector have risen explosively. The average WOZ value in Amsterdam has increased by more than 27% in the last two years alone. For many people, buying a house is no longer an option, despite the historically low interest rates.
Not only in Amsterdam, but throughout the Netherlands, we face major challenges to provide everyone with a sustainable and affordable home. In this collection you will find studies by the city council, Amsterdam knowledge institutes and national organizations about housing. You will also find articles on various themes related to housing such as the housing crisis, equal opportunities, sustainability, office spaces and housing for students, the elderly and the homeless in Amsterdam.Source: Woonagenda 2025, 2017. Privacy
January 28 is European Privacy Day. On this day, in 1981, the Data Protection Treaty was signed in Strasbourg.
Privacy. The theme is more current than ever because of the rapidly digitizing society. New technical gadgets are useful. Think of the smart doorbell that is on the rise. As a municipality, we think about the consequences of using it. Even if we use digital technology ourselves, such as cameras or sensors. What is the municipality doing to protect your privacy? In this collection you will find information about what the municipality of Amsterdam and social partners are doing to guarantee privacy and which tools contribute to this. You will also find a selection of research reports on privacy from various knowledge institutions. The right to privacy is enshrined in Article 10 of The Constitution of the Kinkgdom of the Netherlands.
- Everyone shall have the right to respect for his privacy, without prejudice to restrictions laid down by or pursuant to Act of Parliament.
- Rules to protect privacy shall be laid down by Act of Parliament in connection with the recording and dissemination of personal data.
- Rules concerning the rights of persons to be informed of data recorded concerning them and of the use that is made thereof, and to have such data corrected shall be laid down by Act of Parliament.
The most important rules for handling personal data in The Netherlands are laid down in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Read here more about the Implementation Act of the General Data Protection Regulation.

We
We are approaching 2022. How can we be together in these special times? Many questions and uncertainties...
When our daily routines are challenged again and again, we look for something to hold on to. Rhythm can give us this support. Rhythm is everywhere; in ourselves, between us and around. Because rhythm is essential to life, it is valuable to learn about it, especially for younger people, and for all of us in times of pandemic lockdowns.
This is why scientists and artists have engaged with making stories on rhythm from their different perspectives. From these rhythm stories we have made podcasts in which the authors read their story to you.
The rhythm stories were published in Values for Survival, Cahier 3, Tuning to Rhythm. The research took place in the context of the parallel research program to the Dutch contribution to the 17th Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, which was commissioned by Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. The research was designed in collaboration with Huda AbiFarès.
In this 'We'-collection you can find the first four podcasts in the series. You can also find the links to the collections 'Are' and 'Rythm' containing the others as well as as the book and the video that were made for the project. In addition, there's also a link to the collection containing all the documents from the project. -

Refugees
Worldwide there are millions of refugees fleeing their homeland. Many of them live in Amsterdam.
The refugee issue shows us that we still have a lot to do to get things done. Despite the constant current events, we are not always prepared for a new flow of refugees. However, many steps have been taken in terms of involvement and responsibility. In the Netherlands, many organizations and research bureaus are active in this matter, such as the UAF for student refugees, the Netherlands Council for Refugees, the Verwey Jonker Institute, the Knowledge Platform for Integration and Society, the Advisory Committee for Immigration Affairs, the Social and Cultural Planning Office and the Refugee Foundation.

Water
Amsterdam and water are inextricably connected.
Already in the Middle Ages, Amsterdam was a canal city and was surrounded and protected by the still existing moats Singel, Kloveniersburgwal and Geldersekade. In recent decades however, water has begun to play a more hostile role in our lives. Although we as a delta country have long been fighting against the water, we are faced with a major taks due to the risking sea level and extreme weather conditions.
We are already working on the solutions. Not only to protect us from water, but also to reduce our emission so that the effects of climate change do not escalate further, to address the water scarcity and social inequalities that come with it and to restore the aquatic ecosystem. In this collection you will find research, manuals and solutions related to these water themes. -

Inequality of opportunity
Each person in Amsterdamer deserves the opportunity to develop himself/herself irrespective of his or her background.
That is one of the main challenges in Amsterdam. In a fair city, everyone has the same opportunities and possibilities, regardless of where you were born, the neighborhood you grew up in and the network around you. People from all income groups, education levels and types of migration background should be able to live, participate, develop and shape their own future in the city.Do you also have research, current projects or material that should be here? The nature inclusive society
In this collection you will find relevant research, initiatives and collaborations regarding nature inclusivity in Amsterdam.
Man and everything else that lives are inextricably linked. People are surrounded by nature and its nature. The forest is nature, but so is the city. We share our city with countless people, animals, insects, trees, plants, fungi and microbes. In Amsterdam alone we live with trillions. But often, and especially in Western culture, humans are considered the center of everything and the only one with a voice in determining how we interact with our environment. However, last summer's many wildfires and floods, the pandemic that we are still feeling the effects of and the latest IPCC report prove that nature also has a voice and uses it to talk back. Whether nature warns us or retaliates, it is time to listen to her and give her voice a place in our society.Do you also have research, current projects or material that should be here? The climate-proof city
How do we prepare the city of Amsterdam for the consequences of climate change?
Due to climate change, we have to deal more often with extreme weather conditions. Such as longer drought periods, more heat waves and extreme rainfall. These extreme weather events are also becoming more visible in Amsterdam. To protect the city against the consequences of climate change and to stop further exhaustion of the earth, it is necessary to make Amsterdam a climate-proof and climate-neutral city.
In this collection you will find various studies on climate change in the city. Click on ‘more information’ for an overview of the different parts in this collection. This collection contains the following components:
- Nieuw Amsterdams Klimaat 2050
The Amsterdam Climate Neutral Roadmap is a document that illustrates the ambitions for a long-term vision on the Amsterdam energy transition and for short-term actions. In the Roadmap, we describe the main ingredients of our strategy to initiate and keep the transition from fossil to renewable energy in motion.
- Groenvisie 2050: een leefbare stad voor mens en dier
The Groenvisie paints a picture of Amsterdam as a green city and how this can be further developed between now and the year 2050. The task to densify the city with new housing and the challenges regarding energy and mobility have led to busier open space. At the same time, there is a growing need to make use of pleasant green space close to home. Given the importance of green space, urban tasks should not be at the expense of green space and its quality.
- Climate in the city council
The municipality has the ambition to make Amsterdam a climate-neutral and climate-proof city. To this end, the municipality needs research on themes regarding sustainability and green in the city in order to draw up visions, goals and strategies. In this collection you will find various studies and reports on climate that has been discussed in the city council.
- The energy transition
The municipality of Amsterdam is working on a gas-free, emission-free and energy-neutral city. Sustainable heat sources, alternative fuels and the sustainable generation of electricity from solar and wind energy are of great importance. In this collection you will find articles related to the energy transition in Amsterdam.
- Designing climate proof cities
In order to protect Amsterdam against extreme weather conditions, it is important to increase the city’s climate resilience. Water bodies and the greening of the city play a major role in this challenge. In this collection you will find solutions to reduce nuisance during extreme weather conditions.

Democracy in practice
Is it possible to ensure an accessible and humane government for all residents of the city?
And how do we ensure that the future of the city takes shape in consultation with residents? In this collection you will find various parts that show how Amsterdam tries to find answers to these questions. Click on 'more information' for a description of the different parts in this collection. This collection contains the following components:
- Executing democracy:
In this essay, Anouk de Koning (Urban Citizen Fellow at NIAS) uses examples that deal with everyday contacts between youth professionals and parents and children, or area brokers and residents, addressing questions about democratization. It is precisely in such everyday contacts that the relationship between government and citizen takes shape. - Democratization & Area-oriented working: Democratization is one of the keywords in the coalition agreement. The municipality wants, among other things, more say and ownership for residents and a better connection between residents and the municipality. In addition, the coalition agreement mentions neighborhood- and area-based working as crucial for a city the size of Amsterdam. But what exactly is area-based working? In this collection you will find relevant publications on democratization in Amsterdam as well as relevant local and national publications that focus on area-based working and various forms of neighborhood approach. Here you can also find the 'Administrative System Evaluation' which shows how the City of Amsterdam, together with residents, reflects on the newly designed administrative system.
- Civil servants about taking risks in innovation (video session):
From building 'donut coalitions' to advisory councils for migrants; city clerk Peter Teesink speaks together with other important municipal innovators about methodologies for turning moonshots into reality. (Creative Bureaucracy Festival) - What do we need? Stories and publication:
Here you will find the publication 'What do we need?', Which stems from the more than 150 stories that have been collected with the question 'What do you need in the future of Amsterdam?'. In addition to the publication, here you can also view all the stories collected per district .
With these retrieved stories, 'What do we need' inspires in the realization of the Spatial Vision (draft). - Your voice in policy for the future: In this collection you will find both the entire pdf of the draft Spatial Vision document. With the Spatial Vision, the municipality determines what kind of a city Amsterdam wants to be in 2050 and how to work together to achieve this. In the coming weeks everyone can react on this draft (until March 4). In addition, this collection also contains the Environmental Impact Assessment and the open research Spatial Vision collection of the Spatial Vision project team, which outlines the context of the Spatial Vision in the making.
Various quotes from the stories retrieved in 'What do we need?' are included in the vision in the making.

LaBGreen De Bretten

Integral Design Method Public Space
Here you can follow our work around the Integral Design Method Public Space (IOOR). You can check the agenda for upcoming events and exhibitions, download the IOOR and BiodiverCITY publications, or view the contributions to the Venice and Seoul biennales in 2021. Under 'In-depth research' you can learn more about climate adaptation, circularity and soil biodiversity (BiodiverCITY).
Amsterdam faces a major challenge in terms of the transition of public space in the coming years. A transition driven by climate change, the switch to sustainable sources of energy, the increasing scarcity of raw materials, and the digitalization of society. In addition, the city is growing steadily and increasing in density. Infrastructure below ground is growing apace, but space is running out. If current methods of city and area development remain unchanged, the transition will stagnate. In new development schemes the traditional idea of thinking from above ground to below ground is a thing of the past. Prioritizing underground space and the multiple use of space, the design method introduced in this publication is geared to programming public areas in an integral manner. In this method, public and private parties work together from an early stage to reserve space below ground for a healthy living environment, for new energy systems, for solutions to problems caused by heat and precipitation, for the desired circularity, and for nature-inclusive design. This accumulation of measures contributes to green, attractive and high-quality public space that makes the city a fine place in which to live, work, relax, play and enjoy life.
